James Brown
I feel good. My paintball wounds are still healing. I wish someone had told me about that. My son is home from his first year of college. Go Homey. I’m his biggest fan. Great young man. He didn’t ask to come into the world so going to make sure he gets the benefits of my mistakes to be better, stronger, faster. I didn’t go to the pistol range this week, but I did go trap shooting. Not going to the NRA annual meeting but want to know what you see, hear and are doing this weekend, so if you tweet, could you include #kennblanchardNRA on your tweet so I can live vicariously through you. I submitted my first article to Guns and Patriots, so look for my first piece there about black conservatives and the invisible man. Zombie Strike is back and I am damn happy about it. Actually, I feel good about it all.
James Brown
When I was a kid, we were like the evans family on Good times but we had a house. When things were going good, my dad would invite his buddies over for drinks and they would play his james brown records. When my step dad was laughing it was safe to be home. My best memories of home always had James Brown playing in the background. How can you not be happy with the Godfather of Soul. If I really wanted to make my step father laugh I would entertain his friends if asked to show a new dance move or something. You can’t go wrong with a James Brown move. It would turn the party out. If you have never seen one of his moves, I found a you tube clip and put it on urbanshooterpodcast dot com’s show notes page.
Trap shooting.
Trap shooting is one of the three major forms of competitive clay pigeon shooting (shotgun shooting at clay targets). The others are Skeet shooting and sporting clays.
I went to a really nice facility in Prince Georges County, MD. It’s a park and planning trap and skeet range. With the shotguns donated by Berretta. Really nice shotguns I might add. I think I shot using a White Onyx and that sucker on the site is like 2K. They are based out of Maryland but I have never talked to them. I have to work on that. I shot with my retired fishing buddies that were anxious to get together before our saltwater fishing season started.
Trap is where you have one orange clay Frisbee target that gets chucked out of a computer run shooting house that throws it so all shooters will receive exactly the same targets as all other shooters, hence providing the equal difficulty for all. 10 left, 10 right and 5 straight-away targets to each competitor in a randomized sequence. There is a microphone release system provides equality in target release times. But sometimes a cough or other body noise will unintentionally launch a bird.
The process of a round goes like this: There were three of us shooters, one to each station, I think there were five stations. You load one round into your shotgun which should have a choke on it and be a long barreled shotgun of at least 28” long. Or your shot will not make it. The shotgun rounds are not like the buckshot or police defensive loads we normally think about when you shoot a shotgun and it beats your shoulder into submission. This is a lighter load with special shot. There is a limit to the size. Its really calm, like golf with a gun. Once you are ready, you load and not until then, then You say pull, are something and a clay bird is launched. You After firing at his target, the first shooter waits for the second shooter to complete firing, then moves to station two, with the shooter on station six smoothly moving to station one. This procedure continues through the squad until the completion of the round. You shoot a box of 25 and you count how many of the 25 you have hit.
I would really like to see more urban shooters out enjoying this sport.
New Product review.
Speaking of shotguns what about the brutally of recoil? I know a lot of gun owners that live in the city at least have a shotgun. For one, if you are in the gun unfriendly place of the District of Columbia, it is all you can have without attracting unwarranted attention. You buy a Remington 870, a Winchester or a Mossberg and then it sits in the closet. If you take it out to shoot, where do you go? Most ranges around this area, frown on shotgun use but if you go out in the country or find an outdoor range to blast it, you will soon find out that it is not the most pleasurable thing in the world. Lord help you if you have one with a pistol grip only stock. You will not be firing a box of loads with that puppy. The torque on your wrist is nasty. But I got a solution for you.
When I was at Blackhawk I got a peek and a new product that you can buy for recoil reduction called the Knoxx system. It replaces the stock with a synthetic one with some cool engineering. And the cool part is I have used it, shot with it and it works. It’s not expensive and I have one for my 870 Remington now.
