Tip of the Week “torture”

Question of the Week: How did perspective/life change when you first decided to a carry concealed firearm?

Al wrote: Afraid someone would notice and then call the cops. An overwhelming sense of responsibility.

Miguel wrote: Hyper attentive at not even coming closer to break any law by accident. Lots of modification on how and where I seat. Public bathroom usage. Aware of Legal Gun Free Zones where I could walk in without thinking before but after it would mean… jail time. Aware of the wind blowing my cover garment away. Realizing that some intimate people would not understand my choice of being responsible for my safety and would make their disapproval loudly (This caught me off guard with a couple of people who I thought would understand). Also, becoming a tad more relaxed in the sense that I had one extra tool in case of emergency, that I had an out. That I did not need to act tough or thug to avoid a confrontation but that knowing that I was able to take drastic measures if needed made me very tranquil and that usually makes real thugs nervous.

Ronald wrote: My wife noticed that my level of vigilance and awareness increased because I was no longer being acted upon I was now an actor.

Allen wrote: That you have the ability to alter someone else’s life and the lives of other with a split second decision. An increase in self restraint, patience, and in some cases, forgiveness. On the flip side, the decision has been made that under no uncertain terms, I will hand over my life or my family’s lives to someone that has no regard or respect for his fellow man by murdering someone else.

Rob wrote: I’ve carried for over 30 years, 18 of those on the job, so my initial perspective was more work related than life changing. Any doubts or fears about possible consequences have long since been laid to rest. While I retired some years ago, I maintain my level of awareness, which my wife often refers to as “searching for predators”.

Chuck wrote: First thing I realized was that I could no longer afford to be aggressive or competitive… Having some doof go off on me because I cut him off in traffic could result in a scuffle… etc., etc…

Keith wrote: My respect for life has increased. I don’t get angry as much as I try to back down and be humble much more often. I am much more aware of my surroundings and the laws that govern me. I don’t sit on my hands and just allow myself to be spoon feed by the government or media. Most of all, I now think for myself.

Erica wrote: In a broad vision, I am more alert and aware of my surroundings and situations. I will not hesitate to protect the lives of myself or my family but I also try to avoid the need to use my handgun. In a smaller scope, my mom’s side of the family has either embraced concealed carry or accepted it and don’t fear having guns around. My father’s side (except those married in) seems to think I have been through some traumatic experience to make me want to carry. I CHOSE to protect myself, just like they made a decision not to.

Eric wrote: Kind of like after I rode my motorcycle the first time on the beltway. ‘Am I doing this right?’ “Can anyone tell I am new to this?’ then after a while it was again with the motorcycle analogy. Made me more aware of my surroundings, and look out for perceived dander and avoid it when possible. Any how I must be responsible with my use. Just because I can doesn’t mean I will.

Mark wrote: I’ve had CCP since 1990, yet even today in the back of mind two questions never leave: “Is it really concealed?” (Even when I know it is), and, “Should I have brought my gun?” (This nags me a lot in a free victim zone). Guess how I resolve those two questions. Remember you’re only guessing.

Jay wrote: Since becoming a CCW holder, I must admit that I am a more patient person. Like Masaad Ayoob said, ‘when you carry leave your middle finger at home.” I also understand that I have a right to carry and doing something stupid could strip me of that right. I have turned down many free adult beverages because I do carry and I would hate to have any signs of such a beverage in my system if I was carrying, just in case something happens. I believe had I not taken a CCW course, I would have probably had a completely different outlook as a CCW holder.

In October 2010, I want to present a check representing the contributions of a few pro-gun people that care.

Help me raise money for the City of Hope. It’s a independent medical and research institution setting the standards for cancer care nationwide. For many people, City of Hope is where hope begins.

I know pro-gun people love life. We do the right thing so that we can protect our families from criminals. We are passionate about our freedom, children, our communities and our country.

Make your checks payable to City of Hope and send them to me by mail, ASAP, to Kenn Blanchard, PO Box 2, Upper Marlboro, MD 20773 or donate online.

And lets give those fighting cancer more hope. Thank you.

The Second Amendment Foundation is helping MD man get his legal right to protect himself back from the Handgun Roster Board.

And here is the original Lawsuit: http://saf.org/legal.action/md.lawsuit/complaint.pdf

MANCHESTER, Conn. — Omar Thornton, a warehouse driver who was asked to resign his job at a beer distributor killed eight people and wounded several and took his own life August 3rd.

Grassroots and Boots

On episode 177 of The Urban Shooter Podcast, along with my usual joviality, I got the opportunity to interview the president of a successful pro-rights group called the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL). On the show, Philip Van Cleave spoke candidly and proudly about the group. I entitled the whole episode VCDL so you can find it later if you ever want to. They have been around since 1995 and involved in skirmishes that matter to residents of Virginia. This local assembly of pro-gun people has made an incredible impact in their state by doing what grassroots movement do.

Driven by their desire to keep the U.S. Constitution from being maligned and misinterpreted by defending the Second Amendment the VCDL has done more locally for the rights of gun owners in Virginia than anyone. I have witnessed their work and except for their own small celebrations they have received little public acknowledgment. I wish to give my brothers and sisters in arms a big thumbs up from where I sit. I appreciate them because they are aggressive but not disrespectful. They are apolitical but focused. It’s amazing to see a organization move as effectively as this one does without as many resources as some have. It is a testament to the power of the American people.

The VCDL holds small rallies and restaurant open carry events that draw good numbers. They are good at communication and have progressed from the fax to Facebook. They move with the effectiveness of a small guerilla group. I have seen them at all pro-gun events with the familiar hunter orange buttons proclaiming simply but effectively that Guns Save Lives. They are the ‘boots” on the ground that politicians and money hungry national organizations wish they could control. Several states have adopted their template. One of the notable things about the group is simplicity. Even their website is no frills. It is easy to navigate and demonstrates that sometimes we can get too obsessed over style versus content. The substance is there. You will also notice the absence of mention of well known national pro-gun organizations on the site and in our dialogue. Donations to sponsor their events come largely from members and gun show coordinators. This spoke volumes to me as a reminder to all who seek to fight for your rights must do so without the support of traditional groups that have budgets, an image, and may be more interested in maintaining the status quo than helping you win your fight. Even though we have many pro-rights groups out there, the price of freedom is still depending on how much you are willing to defend it.

Grassroots organizations like this are what made this country one of the greatest nations on the planet. This is how this country was founded. This is how we defeated tyranny. This is how we will continue to defend the freedom our forefathers have died for. Thank you VCDL for all you do for gun rights in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It’s the people that are praised here. They just all seem to come from the same state. Visit www.vcdl.org and see for yourself.

A Human Predator Selects His Victims In This Way

1. Their age

2. Their sex-men are usually robbed more often than women because of their pride.

3. The location- is it heavily trafficked or isolated

4. Awareness-are you sightseeing or distracted

5. Signs of affluence- money, jewelry, expensive cars

These Signs Signal That You Are About To Have A Bad Day.

1. You are visibly being watched- an attack will focus on you before his attack.

2. You are being followed- you can determine this by changing your walking pattern to see if they repeat it.

3. Loitering around your vehicle- if there are unknown people there don’t go near it.

4. The creeps- women call it intuition; men have it too but ignore it. If you feel like something’s wrong don’t go into the area.

5. You are being approached by a stranger or several people- they’ll usually smile to get closer don’t let them.

When you are about to be attacked you will usually feel it before its execution. You will know something is wrong. Preparation is what will save you. Think about a spider’s web. The spider doesn’t attack until it is sure that you are trapped and can’t escape. Tentativeness at all times will save your life. Never allow a stranger to penetrate your personal space anything within 25 yards is a no no unless you are in a mall or other heavily trafficked.
