In the News:

The Second Amendment Foundation is helping MD man get his legal right to protect himself back from the Handgun Roster Board.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/07/29/AR2010072905675.html

And here is the original Lawsuit: http://saf.org/legal.action/md.lawsuit/complaint.pdf

MANCHESTER, Conn. — Omar Thornton, a warehouse driver who was asked to resign his job at a beer distributor killed eight people and wounded several and took his own life August 3rd.

Grassroots and Boots

On episode 177 of The Urban Shooter Podcast, along with my usual joviality, I got the opportunity to interview the president of a successful pro-rights group called the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL). On the show, Philip Van Cleave spoke candidly and proudly about the group. I entitled the whole episode VCDL so you can find it later if you ever want to. They have been around since 1995 and involved in skirmishes that matter to residents of Virginia. This local assembly of pro-gun people has made an incredible impact in their state by doing what grassroots movement do.

Driven by their desire to keep the U.S. Constitution from being maligned and misinterpreted by defending the Second Amendment the VCDL has done more locally for the rights of gun owners in Virginia than anyone. I have witnessed their work and except for their own small celebrations they have received little public acknowledgment. I wish to give my brothers and sisters in arms a big thumbs up from where I sit. I appreciate them because they are aggressive but not disrespectful. They are apolitical but focused. It’s amazing to see a organization move as effectively as this one does without as many resources as some have. It is a testament to the power of the American people.

The VCDL holds small rallies and restaurant open carry events that draw good numbers. They are good at communication and have progressed from the fax to Facebook. They move with the effectiveness of a small guerilla group. I have seen them at all pro-gun events with the familiar hunter orange buttons proclaiming simply but effectively that Guns Save Lives. They are the ‘boots” on the ground that politicians and money hungry national organizations wish they could control. Several states have adopted their template. One of the notable things about the group is simplicity. Even their website is no frills. It is easy to navigate and demonstrates that sometimes we can get too obsessed over style versus content. The substance is there. You will also notice the absence of mention of well known national pro-gun organizations on the site and in our dialogue. Donations to sponsor their events come largely from members and gun show coordinators. This spoke volumes to me as a reminder to all who seek to fight for your rights must do so without the support of traditional groups that have budgets, an image, and may be more interested in maintaining the status quo than helping you win your fight. Even though we have many pro-rights groups out there, the price of freedom is still depending on how much you are willing to defend it.

Grassroots organizations like this are what made this country one of the greatest nations on the planet. This is how this country was founded. This is how we defeated tyranny. This is how we will continue to defend the freedom our forefathers have died for. Thank you VCDL for all you do for gun rights in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It’s the people that are praised here. They just all seem to come from the same state. Visit www.vcdl.org and see for yourself.

I got a chance to get away for my birthday to Charleston, SC. It was rich in heritage. Here is some of the stuff I learned while there. Slave rebellions, Denmark Vesey, Exercise for Men, Zombie Strike #33, How to Survive a Stadium Riot, Maintenance man shoots intruder the day the McDonald V. Chicago case is heard in the US Supreme Court.

Two articles this week that stand out to me from the normally anti-gun Washington Post

This is June, my favorite month of the year. I celebrate a birthday, usually gain or lose something physically. Like this was the month I got my first whisker, now my first gray hair, etc. Well this year I may discovered I have multiple personalities. I think just three. One is real gentle and loving. One is wild and reckless, fun to be around, real silly, and one is just mean. I think the other two keep him in check. You ever felt like that?

According to a United States Department of Justice report:

38 percent of assaults and 60 percent of rapes occur during home invasions

One in five homes undergoes a home invasion or break-in

There are more than 8,000 home invasions every day in North America

50 percent of home invasions involve the use of a weapon; the most common weapons used are knives or other cutting instruments

In 48 percent of home invasions, victims sustain physical injuries

Victims age 60 or older make up 17 percent of home invasion victims

In 68 percent of home invasions, victims and the accused are strangers; in 11 percent of these cases, victims and the accused are friends, business associates, or family

The best defense is always offense, so prepare yourself, your home, and your family to defend against home invasion:

Maryland “Yeah,I did it,” Kenn Blanchard exclaimed proudly after leaving the building where he left two hundred spent casings of nine millimeter ammunition on the floor. A man described by eyewitnesses as looking a lot like Donovan McNabb walked into the Maryland Small Arms Range late Tuesday evening, paid for an hour of range time and then calmly opened fire on dozens of unsuspected zombie targets.

Sources confirm the black man with a gun as Rev. Kenn Blanchard, entered the range at 5 pm armed with a Glock 17 and a Browning Hi power. After turning over his driver’s license and putting on his eye and ear protection he walked onto stall three and almost at once began his shooting spree.

He just kept firing, over and over, again and again said a witness that requested not to be named. From the moment he arrived it was clear this man had one thing on his mind.

We won’t be right back with this anticlimactic conclusion after these messages.

•	Zombie Strike #28
•	Have Gun Will Travel-TSA
•	Interview with Todd Jarrett on traveling with firearms.
•	Smooth from Santana a la Kenn

I saw this cool satirical article in “The Onion” that gave me the idea to use as the news flash and topic for this weeks show. This black gun man is going to open fire —up the grill. With the Memorial Day coming this week it is the unofficial start of the summer. I thought about those days when school was out and we had a summer vacation.

If you are traveling with firearms, listen for some tips and insights I have for you from Todd Jarrett. He is a professional shooter, competitor, trainer and exhibitionist that is always dealing with TSA and the airline industry with guns. They call it traveling with ‘Special Items.” He was a gun rep with several different companies over the years and a nice guy on top of it all. I recorded this conversation with my old iphone and a voice recording app. It is not the best but it is not bad.

There are a lot of myths about transporting firearms on airplanes. The bottom line is that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is the ultimate authority.

Here are my common sense rules of thumb:

Declare your unloaded firearms

Lock the case

Keep a low profile

Follow TSA rules and regs. Comply with any additional given by the airlines.

A few myths about carrying firearms

Not allowed to carry pistols

Only shotguns allowed

Each airline has its own policy

You will be put on a watchlist if you travel with a firearm

You can’t transport ammo

You need a concealed carry permit, hunting license or some certification to transport a firearm.

Zombie Strike continues thanks to the talented Derek Ward with episode #28. The Strike team is still in Wyoming of all places dealing with some supernatural funky stuff.

Think I’ll fire up the grill this weekend and play a little Santana. Sing with me as I do one of my favorites, “Smooth”.

Thank you for listening. Please give a review on itunes or leave feedback on the site. Love you. Shalom Baby, Kenn

I feel good. My paintball wounds are still healing. I wish someone had told me about that. My son is home from his first year of college. Go Homey. I’m his biggest fan. Great young man. He didn’t ask to come into the world so going to make sure he gets the benefits of my mistakes to be better, stronger, faster. I didn’t go to the pistol range this week, but I did go trap shooting. Not going to the NRA annual meeting but want to know what you see, hear and are doing this weekend, so if you tweet, could you include #kennblanchardNRA on your tweet so I can live vicariously through you. I submitted my first article to Guns and Patriots, so look for my first piece there about black conservatives and the invisible man. Zombie Strike is back and I am damn happy about it. Actually, I feel good about it all.

James Brown

When I was a kid, we were like the evans family on Good times but we had a house. When things were going good, my dad would invite his buddies over for drinks and they would play his james brown records. When my step dad was laughing it was safe to be home. My best memories of home always had James Brown playing in the background. How can you not be happy with the Godfather of Soul. If I really wanted to make my step father laugh I would entertain his friends if asked to show a new dance move or something. You can’t go wrong with a James Brown move. It would turn the party out. If you have never seen one of his moves, I found a you tube clip and put it on urbanshooterpodcast dot com’s show notes page.

Trap shooting.

Trap shooting is one of the three major forms of competitive clay pigeon shooting (shotgun shooting at clay targets). The others are Skeet shooting and sporting clays.

I went to a really nice facility in Prince Georges County, MD. It’s a park and planning trap and skeet range. With the shotguns donated by Berretta. Really nice shotguns I might add. I think I shot using a White Onyx and that sucker on the site is like 2K. They are based out of Maryland but I have never talked to them. I have to work on that. I shot with my retired fishing buddies that were anxious to get together before our saltwater fishing season started.

Trap is where you have one orange clay Frisbee target that gets chucked out of a computer run shooting house that throws it so all shooters will receive exactly the same targets as all other shooters, hence providing the equal difficulty for all. 10 left, 10 right and 5 straight-away targets to each competitor in a randomized sequence. There is a microphone release system provides equality in target release times. But sometimes a cough or other body noise will unintentionally launch a bird.

The process of a round goes like this: There were three of us shooters, one to each station, I think there were five stations. You load one round into your shotgun which should have a choke on it and be a long barreled shotgun of at least 28” long. Or your shot will not make it. The shotgun rounds are not like the buckshot or police defensive loads we normally think about when you shoot a shotgun and it beats your shoulder into submission. This is a lighter load with special shot. There is a limit to the size. Its really calm, like golf with a gun. Once you are ready, you load and not until then, then You say pull, are something and a clay bird is launched. You After firing at his target, the first shooter waits for the second shooter to complete firing, then moves to station two, with the shooter on station six smoothly moving to station one. This procedure continues through the squad until the completion of the round. You shoot a box of 25 and you count how many of the 25 you have hit.

I would really like to see more urban shooters out enjoying this sport.

New Product review.

Speaking of shotguns what about the brutally of recoil? I know a lot of gun owners that live in the city at least have a shotgun. For one, if you are in the gun unfriendly place of the District of Columbia, it is all you can have without attracting unwarranted attention. You buy a Remington 870, a Winchester or a Mossberg and then it sits in the closet. If you take it out to shoot, where do you go? Most ranges around this area, frown on shotgun use but if you go out in the country or find an outdoor range to blast it, you will soon find out that it is not the most pleasurable thing in the world. Lord help you if you have one with a pistol grip only stock. You will not be firing a box of loads with that puppy. The torque on your wrist is nasty. But I got a solution for you.

When I was at Blackhawk I got a peek and a new product that you can buy for recoil reduction called the Knoxx system. It replaces the stock with a synthetic one with some cool engineering. And the cool part is I have used it, shot with it and it works. It’s not expensive and I have one for my 870 Remington now.

…Victory Over Oneself.

I started this week off excited because not only have I reached another highpoint in my life with this show but I have solicited the help of others to help me improve what I do. I hope you notice. I spoke to five really nice people this week. One is helping me deliver my show better. Two you will hear this week on the show, one created a new theme song for the show and another made a cool logo for a baseball hat I plan to sport this spring.

Speaking of spring I absolutely love the coat I bought from Kitanica.net. It looks like a mix between a bomb tech’s coat and a motorcycle jacket. I feel like a superhero in it. It fits great.

Second Amendment March

This week I want to remind some and introduce to others that on April 19th there is going to be a grassroots gathering of Second Amendment supporters at the Washington Monument and it is scheduled to run from 10:00 a.m. until approximately 4:00 p.m. To do this, I have the media coordinator of the Second Amendment March, Liz Foley from Texas.

The Second Amendment March is a grass-roots movement, meaning many of the organizations you expect to support it won’t. But the new kids on the block and ones that have always been no nonsense will. This movement is pulling together Second Amendment supporters across the United States for a peaceful day in our nation’s capital. They are calling on everyone that supports the right to keep and bear arms, regardless of political leanings, gender, race, religion, etc.

Why are we doing this? It is to fire up and stir up Americans that still believe in freedom, to petition our elected officials against establishing anti-gun legislation; and to remind America that the Second Amendment is necessary to maintain our right to self defense.

Olympic Shooter Kim Rhode

Zombie Strike #23,

Kenn sings “ring of fire” and he tries a new way of delivery. let me know what you thought of this weeks show.
