Mental Preparedness

You know when you are working on your PC and the hour glass just keeps on spinning?  That is what happens when you don’t have enough random memory to run all the programs being called upon by your computer.  It is sorting things out at millions of second.  When you are trying to close your program, shut the computer off or do something else it is frustrating.  Right?  That same thing happens in your head when you are confronted with a threat to your life and you are unprepared for it.  All the stimuli, fear, disbelief, stress, physical conditions, and the bad guy give you more programs than your brain wants to sort.  The result, temporary paralysis.  You know, Deer in the headlights.  Bad guys utilize this time, to move you like a sheep before the slaughter.  This is the blitzkrieg, the trauma that causes you to be unable to identify your attacker, the time, the weapon or some facts, under normal circumstances you can handle.  How do you get through it?  Mental preparedness.

Being ready to fight is more important than what you use to fight.  You only have a few seconds to make a lasting impression both on a date, a job interview or in an encounter with a bad guy.

For us good guys, the real deal is, you will be reacting to a threat.  From all counts, and every view point, this is a negative.  Reaction is always slower than action.  But now, the good news.  How you react, the speed in which you react, the plan in which you activate, determines if you live or die.  How serious is that for you?

The military, law enforcement, security and mall ninjas operate at a heighten state because they are going into harms way.  But you don’t.  If you are threatened or attacked a decision was made based on your appearance, proximity, or relationship to the bad guy.  You look easy, you are on his turf, he has successfully attacked someone that looked liked you before, he knows you.  This is reality.  Sometimes reality sucks.  How about when your home is attacked?  You in a vehicle?  Late night in the wash room?  Parking garage?  Train station?  All of them are usually because you entered or were in a state that the bad guy was prepared for.

In a home invasion?  A knock on the door during a football game, or scary movie when your attention is on something else.  Its easy.  You are home, you are safe.  Your mind is not prepared for defense now.  That stuff doesn’t happen in your neighborhood.  Brother, sister, that stuff happens in everyone’s neighborhood.  Whenever you hear that, its confirmation that someone is stuck.

There is a pendulum of force that swings both ways.  If I hit you, the reaction I can most likely count on is your reaction to the sudden pain.  It’s the surprise factor.  You don’t drown if you fall into water, only if you stay there.  As soon, as you can get over the surprise, your next move should be to return the favor.  Your attacker is counting on his attack to disorient you, make you submissive.  The way you were struck or attacked may determine how dangerous a threat he feels you are.  The man that is bludgeoned or stabbed after opening the door can use the pendulum in his favor by allowing the attacker to think he was too effective and return the favor at the first opportunity after you don’t do what was expected.  The woman, may have only been punched.  The quicker she can return the favor, the better when maybe the bad guy is expecting her to crumble in the corner.  You take back control in your response to stimuli.  You take back control in your response to a stimuli.  Remember you are the good guy.  The real fight is in your head.  Don’t surrender.  Use your brain.  Be determined, tenacious and relentless until you regain control and stop the threat.  After you defend go for the gusto.  Use, improvise overcome and adapt.  Then bust a move and get the flock out of there.

It’s a good idea to have your firearm on you while you are home.  Even us city dwellers that are unable to carry legally outside our homes should be card carrying concealed carry holders within the walls of our homes.  A gun on your person while you watching a movie, curled up on the couch alone is a lot better than one in a locked box in your closet.  If you have kids, one on your person is better than one in a safe.  If you got relatives over, one on tucked away on your hip is better than one tucked away in a locked closet.

And how about a screw driver, cane, nightstick, can of wasp spray near the door.  Something you can use to give you a minute to get your hands on your firearm.  What happens if you get knocked on your back side near the front door?  Got something you can grab on your way up?  Remember this is your house?  What can you stash there until you can blast the MOFO?  In your car, got a sharpened pencil you can jab into a bad guys face till you ditty maw out of there?  Let your mind work?  Your mind is your primary weapon.

Before you subscribe to the best gun for home defense. The best gun for traveling.  The best gun or whatever.  Remember no one has ever survived by being purely defensive.  Your goal is to weather the first attack (which was not necessarily your fault). Then seize the opportunity to give some offense and then escape.  You will survive if you get a plan before your mind has to wander what it should do.  Don’t let your hour glass get stuck.  Your life depends on it.
